The successful candidate will take a lead role managing APHA’s brand and be responsible for developing APHA’s online strategies, integrating existing tools to achieve better engagement and developing new media initiatives. The Deputy Director, Marketing reports to the Director, Strategic Communications and works with colleagues across APHA to coordinate all marketing activities. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated record of success as an online communicator, including a proven track record of establishing external communications plans, engaging and growing supporter lists, working collaboratively across departments and using social media to enhance reach. Familiarity with Informz or other CRM platforms is required.
Develop and implement online marketing strategies, including creating organizational practices and policies for online engagement.
Lead Branding team to ensure consistent external presentation of APHA’s brand and coordinate with the Core Values Team to educate and motivate staff to “live the brand.”
Lead marketing team and work with staff to develop and implement marketing campaigns in support of membership, fundraising, publications, meetings/events, programs and advocacy.
Oversee all e-mail lists. Test and optimize new data segmentation strategies to feed into department campaigns.
Serve as the key liaison with other departments to optimize the online user experience across all platforms.
Devise innovative strategies to grow APHA’s supporter list, improve the quality of the data and increase interaction/engagement with APHA communication campaigns and programs.
Analyze data and develop new reporting capabilities to gain actionable insight into the composition of APHA's database and track campaigns/offers/executions from end to end across multiple APHA platforms.
Design and maintain data hygiene processes to ensure high quality and accurate data
Coordinate with IT and relevant departments to better integrate various online databases.
Communicate best practices in email marketing to all departments, advise on copy, design, call to action, performance analysis and optimization and oversee email calendar
Manage online marketing budget and APHA’s email marketing tool, Convio.
Explore social media and other new tools and technology and propose appropriate innovations for APHA in order to cultivate an engaged online community.
Organize and support APHA TV for the Annual Meeting, in coordination with Conventions staff.
Oversee strategies and implementation of Generation Public Health in coordination with relevant staff.
Contribute to developing overall marketing strategies beyond the online environment including efforts to develop centralized marketing functions.
Participate in e-commerce team, social media team and Get Ready team.
Supervise the Graphics team, with a focus on ensuring appropriate and consistent branding of graphics projects and delivery of design work in a timely, creative and professional manner.
Work with Graphics team to ensure a service mentality in relationships with other departments, including providing appropriate feedback on the status of projects.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree required. Advanced degree with a focus on marketing and communications or commensurate work experience in the field desired. Four or more years of experience in marketing and online communications. Understanding of the graphic design process. Supervisory experience, including managing staff working remotely. Excellent communications skills, both oral and written. Team player. Ability to prioritize short-term projects and long-term goals, organize time and identify resources for projects. Previous experience with a membership association or other nonprofit advocacy organization desirable, health-related a plus. Experience with using website content management systems (CMS), preferably Sitecore and Sharepoint. Experience using association management tools, preferably iMIS. Experience using constituent relationship management (CRM) systems, preferably Informz. Knowledge of online advertising, Google Adwords, site analytics, etc. Understanding of usability and usability testing. Understanding of new media technologies, including social media, blogs, audio/video production and mobile technologies. Requires occasional lifting and moving of up to 25 lbs. Must be able to travel and work occasional evenings and weekends as job duties or projects require.
Position is based in downtown DC near several metro stations. Hours: 35 hours a week, full-time, Mon- Fri. (daytime). Number of openings: 1.
