The Lawrence Hall of Science is the University of California, Berkeley's public science center, dedicated to innovative science education-with a good dose of fun.
The mission of The Lawrence Hall of Science (The Lawrence) is to inspire and engage through science discovery and learning in ways that advance equity and opportunity. We support high quality education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) everywhere- in schools, science centers, afterschool programs, homes, and universities. Our model learning programs are adopted around the world; our instructional materials are disseminated nationally; and we advance the field of science education through our exhibits, digital tools, professional learning expertise, and research. The Marketing Lead will guide The Lawrence in telling its story. Working in collaboration with the public engagement lead and the leadership of The Lawrence, the Marketing Lead will develop both a marketing strategy for the public science center-including its exhibits, camps, events and community engagement programs, and a strategy for communicating the Lawrence's broader mission and work to a broad range of audiences.
Responsibilities
Communication Strategy (20%)
- Works with The Lawrence senior staff to create and develop long- and short-term strategic communications projects, including marketing plans, to drive increased revenue generation, public awareness, and perception.
- Manages the brand, and defines the message of print and electronic communications, public and media relations, and events and programs to reflect the mission of The Lawrence Hall of Science.
- Works across the organization, consulting with stakeholders to build consensus for communications goals, plans, and quality standards (such as brand usage), and informing them about milestones, successes, and achievements.
Creative Direction and Execution (50%)
- Plans, organizes, and then implements strategic marketing programs, projects, and campaigns to reach a variety of audiences.
- Creates, produces, and evaluates high quality marketing, advertising, and sales promotion materials across multiple media and platforms, including print, web, broadcast and social media, to implement marketing strategies and sales objectives.
- Produces and creates promotional and branded materials, including digital pieces, press releases, advertisement, brochures, flyers, signage, presentations, displays, and exhibit components within time and budget constraints.
- Coordinates appearance and brand identity and ensure materials conform to University's and The Lawrence's publishing policies and standards.
Public Relations (20%)
- Leads and coordinates the Lawrence's public relations activities, advising The Lawrence leadership on message, policy interpretation, problem resolution, and crisis communications when needed.
- Identifies opportunities to articulate The Lawrence's work and impact in compelling terms that will support strategic programmatic and fundraising goals. Pitches the work of The Lawrence to media outlets and responds to incoming media requests.
- Acts as a media representative, acting as the point- of-contact for media as assigned and speaking on behalf of The Lawrence (or connecting media to other senior staff, such as the Director, as appropriate).
- Coordinates press releases and other media outreach for major Lawrence activities, such as exhibit openings, special events, noteworthy research and/or community engagement activities, and other happenings.
Innovation (10%)
- Contributes to ongoing improvement process for The Lawrence's communication activities, including: strategic communications and planning for the organization, and data driven-planning and analysis of customers, audience, and market to pursue audience growth.
- Serves as a member of The Lawrence's customer relationship management database implementation team.
- Inform program development with market research and message testing.
- Assesses professional development opportunities for team to proactively address training needs.
Required Qualifications
- Extensive project management experience, with the skills and ability to drive results and projects to completion.
- Advanced written, visual, interpersonal communication and political acumen skills to effectively represent The Lawrence Hall of Science.
- Thorough knowledge of communication principles, media, and marketing techniques and best practices, particularly in the field of arts, entertainment, and recreation sector.
- Experience managing media buys, specifically with digital and social media channels.
- Experience in event promotion and managing media activity.
- Up to date social media savvy, including engagement strategies for various social media channels, technical aspects and requirements of these channels, and most appropriate and effective applications.
- Research, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
- Must be committed to creating a community that fosters equity of experience and opportunity, and ensure that colleagues of all backgrounds feel safe, welcome, and included.
- Must demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultures, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic background present in our community.
Education
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced skills in developing, designing and implementing creative promotional and advertising strategies.
- Experience and comfort with content management and e-newsletter platforms, as well as Google Analytics.
- Familiarity with the San Francisco Bay Area media landscape.
- Experience in developing targeted messages to audience segments.
- Working knowledge of, or ability to quickly develop an understanding of The Lawrence Hall of Science and/or an institution of a comparable profile including its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure.
- Skill in mentoring less experienced staff.
Salary & Benefits
This is an exempt, monthly paid position with excellent benefits. Contract position, renewable, subject to performance. Starting salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $77,300.00 - $113,600.00
