The Department of Pediatrics is the second largest department in the School of Medicine with over 1500 staff, faculty, trainees and students and an annual budget of approximately $146M consisting of patient care revenue, sponsored research funds, endowments and gifts, state funds and affiliated hospital funding associated with the academic programs within the department. The Department of Pediatrics has a close affiliation with Seattle Children's Hospital (SCH) and Seattle Children's Research Institute (SCRI). Faculty members and staff employees in the Department are located at both institutions. In addition, the Department deploys staff to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC) and other non-UW Medicine affiliated institutions in the region.
This position has a primary worksite off-campus in Seattle near Seattle Children’s Hospital. A hybrid telework arrangement may be available.

The Department of Pediatrics is seeking a founding Manager of Communications & Marketing.
Under the supervision of the Associate Director of Department Operations, and as a member of the Department’s Central Administration leadership team, this role works across units and functions to design and implement an integrated marketing and communications strategy reflective of the Department of Pediatrics mission and identity.
As the inaugural communications manager in the Department of Pediatrics, this position is responsible for establishing the overall strategy and direction of the Department’s internal and external communications & marketing efforts. This position collaborates closely with Department leadership (examples: Division Chiefs, Division Administrators, Directors, Department Chair and Vice Chairs, Central Administration, to carry out the mission of the Department. This position requires an understanding of the local institutional and real-world politics and appropriate content and timing of sensitive communications.
The communications and marketing manager must have a highly effective communication and integration with leadership across the department and the University and with internal and external media relations partners. This position represents the department on task forces, committees and forums that address the role of communication in the department and throughout the University. The position requires knowledge of the complexity of the department - its role in the University of Washington, the stakeholders, priorities, and politics - and the ability to strategically communicate and advance the mission and goals of the department both internally and externally.
This position requires strong people and project management skills. The person should be confident in their ability to problem solve, take initiative, set priorities, and handle multiple projects at once. The successful candidate will be a lead content creator, demonstrate a willingness to stay flexible and nimble in one’s day-to-day activities, and display a propensity to say “yes” when asked to help achieve various goals.
Brand: Build upon the Department of Pediatrics’ strong brand and accelerate efforts to establish consistent brand and identity. Serve as enthusiastic ambassador for UW Pediatrics, providing department-wide support in establishing consistent branding materials, messaging, templates, etc. Strategy: Design, develop goals and benchmarks, for founding department-wide communications and marketing strategy. Opportunity and creativity abound.
Copy & Messaging: Work with content area experts to ensure all messaging for major Department programs, initiatives, and priorities stays current and accurate on the web, in email, and in print. Provide tools, training, and resources to build communications capacity across the department.
Communications Assets: In partnership with the Chair’s office, produce regular internal and external digital communications such as Department newsletter, weekly events, annual report, information flashes, etc. Assist in refining department-wide intranet and supporting structure to enable unit leaders to update content regularly.
Partnership: Establish key relationships, partnership, and communication channels, across partner institutions of Seattle Children’s Hospital, Seattle Children’s Research Institute, Children’s University Medical Group, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Harborview, UW Medicine, School of Medicine, etc.
Executive Support: Support communication needs of the Chair and senior leaders, including internal urgent communications, blog posts, power points, talking points, and remarks, in collaboration with the Chair’s office team.
Website: Elevate existing department website to ensure content is current, target audiences are reached, opportunity to amplify department work and priorities, and is user-friendly for diverse audiences. Create infrastructure to routinely review and update content.
Social media: Establish department social media channels (LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and other relevant social media platforms), and develop strategy for content creation, frequent and compelling updates and presence reflecting our vibrant and diverse contributions to health care, research and educating the next generation of physicians. Implement social media strategy that equips units and individuals with tools, skills, and knowledge they need to contribute social media content.
Impact: Leverage website and social media to tell the story of the people, education, research, and clinical work across the department and in alignment with brand, identity, and mission.
Recruitment: Support Faculty, Trainee and Staff recruitment efforts to secure robust pool of prospective candidates through marketing best practices.
Media Relations: Coordinate with UW Central News team, UW Medicine Communications team, Seattle Children’s Communications team, and other outlets on media relations and outreach, especially regarding the quality and impact of the department’s research, education, clinical care and major initiatives/developments.
Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission and strategic direction of the Department of Pediatrics.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: •Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, or related field, with a minimum of five years’ experience in marketing, communications, or related field.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: •Superior writing and editing skills, with a demonstrated ability to write in a style and voice suitable to different audiences. •Demonstrated strong project management skills. Ability to set priorities, take initiative, problem-solve, handle multiple projects, and exercise good judgment in a fast paced, dynamic, deadline-driven environment. •A creative approach to design, storytelling, and communicating impact. •Demonstrated strong computer skills, including proficiency with graphic design, web publishing applications, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for correspondence, special reports, spreadsheets, databases, forms, etc. •Ability to tell the department's stories across multiple platforms (multi-media communications) •(May substitute education for work experience)
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
DESIRED: •Master’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, or other related field •Experience working in higher education, health care or large research institution •Experience working in a technical environment and engaging and facilitating communication between both technical and non-technical stakeholders •Experience with the use of social media, blogging and other social media strategies •Experience and/or education in Web site planning, design, and implementation •Experience in managing media relations
