University Communications and Marketing is searching for a Principal Video Producer with demonstrated experience in digital filmmaking, including pre-production, filming, lighting, audio, editing, motion graphics, animation and storytelling capabilities to join our team. The Division of University Communications and Marketing leads and coordinates strategic marketing and communications for Carnegie Mellon University. They cultivate the CMU Brand and tell the university's stories with a rich and authentic voice.
The Principal Video Producer will be responsible for producing high-quality promotional content to showcase the university's initiatives, people, programs and research and will be showcased at live, virtual and hybrid events, on CMU's various communications and social media channels, on www.cmu.edu and other university websites, and on prominent digital displays. They will also be responsible for providing valuable creative and technical video consultation to members of the division, executive leadership and other campus constituents.

Lead the production of high-quality, creative video solutions to meet project needs on schedule and strategy, with a high level of live production and post-production expertise.
Manage and perform all aspects of video production with department teammates, including concepting, storyboarding and planning, location scouting and management, talent coordination and preparation, and setting up, operating and maintaining professional camera, lighting and audio equipment to film interviews and relevant b-roll.
Lead collaboration with campus partners and external vendors to ensure that video projects are optimized for playback in live, virtual and hybrid events on a variety of platforms, including developing show flows and attend events to call cues if necessary.
Direct and edit video and audio, and design titles, visuals, motion graphics and animations using industry standard software such as Adobe Creative Cloud.
Transcode footage and finished videos for delivery on a variety of video platforms.
Manage an archive of production and post-production assets on in-house video server, and search for and provide specific footage upon request.
Coordinate in-house video server connections, operation, backup and maintenance with Computing Services partners, server vendor and external technical consultants.
Assist with developing and maintain quality control of video asset management procedures such as metadata tagging. Curate and share collections of assets in digital asset management system.
Manage the video team's workflow for multiple projects on differing timelines.
Have oversight of all video project planning and implementation, and work with director, photo & video and project managers to adjust scopes and deadlines if necessary.
Determine the best allocation of time and talent to cover project workload. Employ and manage external production companies, freelancers and interns as needed.
Stay abreast of trends in digital storytelling, new formats and emerging communications channels and recommend new techniques, styles and productions to benefit the CMU brand.
Perform under general supervision, reporting to the director, photo & video. Exercise independent judgment. Meet with supervisor and team to discuss issues and progress on projects and take on additional duties as requested.
Collaborate with photographers, designers and other members of creative department on a regular basis, as well as with video producers and other creatives in units and divisions across the university.
This position will have contact with computer monitor for long periods of time; may need to work outside in inclement weather and in various locations on campus requiring protective gear and procedures (i.e., chemical labs).
You must demonstrate:
High level of proficiency in non-linear editing software using the Adobe Suite and in creating motion graphics in After Effects using layer-based vector illustrations desirable.
Advanced knowledge of video compression for a variety of applications and distribution.
Ability to reliably back up files and follow digital video archiving procedures.
Ability to take direction as well as ability to make creative suggestions.
Ability to work cooperatively and professionally with faculty and staff from all levels of the university.
Ability to adjust priorities to deliver projects to specification in a fast-paced environment.
Good technical problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, including diagnosing and taking steps to resolve issues with video equipment and computer and server components and to test and make changes to procedures as needed.

Bachelor's or Associate's Degree in art/design or a technical field, or equivalent combination of training and experience.
A combination of 7 years professional experience in creating and producing video projects, producing large-scale broadcast events, and managing a video production team on large-scale productions. Supervisory and higher education experience is desirable.
Candidates who can provide samples of previous work that demonstrate creative, functional and technical competency are preferred.
Successful background check.
Must be able to lift, move and set up equipment up to 50 lbs.; able to climb hills and stairs, able to stand or stoop for extended periods.
Must be able to travel to on- and off- campus locations as requested; evening and weekend hours will be required.
