The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) is seeking a Strategic Marketing and Communications Director whose purpose will be to help the organization to achieve its mission through the direction of strategic marketing and communications that build AIAA’s visibility, credibility, and reputation while increasing the value of AIAA to its members, corporate members and other stakeholders. This individual will oversee multi-faceted marketing and communications programs to establish AIAA as the preeminent voice in shaping the future of the global aerospace community. The Director will enhance member and community engagement, awareness and use of valued products, professional development programs and services to meet their professional needs and prepare them and the field for the future.
Brand Awareness and Exposure: Ensure positioning and message consistency across core stakeholders of AIAA. Oversee a brand strategy and compelling value proposition that unifies our “why we exist” value and messaging across core organizational entities and programs.
Media Outreach/PR: Position AIAA as the leading professional society, timely source of technical information and commentary for the media, policymakers, members and other key audiences through media relations and digital PR/brand journalism.
Marketing: Oversee enterprise-wide functions of upstream and downstream marketing and product management (market research, product marketing, digital marketing, data analytics). Employ best practices for digital marketing across paid, owned and earned channels. Provide real-time analyses and contextual reports around campaigns and for stakeholders. Oversee enterprise-wide promotional and member aquistion strategy, logistics, and operations. Oversee market research and target of new markets.customer.
Web Strategy: Provide the bridge from marketing communciaitons to the public facing website to facilicate a first-rate customer experience and communciaitons platform across the website and continually move toward improved personalization.
Social Media: Oversee the growing representation and utilization of AIAA’s social media channels for organic and paid purposes
Issues and Public Policy Management: Demonstrate AIAA’s leadership on key policy and practice issues that impact the aeropace industry stakeholders.
Member and Event Communications: Coordinate and enhance efforts to effectively reach and or engage a wide variety of members thru the member journey map with more customized and personalized information.
Internal Communications: Build the commitment of staff to deliver high performance and results to further enhance productivity, project success, high-functioning teams and quality customer engagement
Crisis Communications: Manage public controversies or news inquiries/situations that could negatively affect the organization’s or profession’s reputation.
Executive: Provide executive presentation and talking points support. Conduct media and message training sessions for top leaders and executive spokespeople.
Administration/Operations: Manage and oversee five direct reports and 12 department staff total, two volunteer committees (Public Policy Committee, Cosponsor Review Committee) and be member of the leadership team, public relations policies and procedures, and attend/support the Exceutive Director’s work for Board of Trustees. Participate in internal working groups and leadership teams as needed. The Strategic Marketing Communications department consists of Web Strategy (2 personnel), Marketing (3 personnel), Communications (2 personnel), Aerospace America (3 personnel), Editorial and Production/AIAA Bulletin (1 personnel) and Public Policy (1 personnel).
Qualifications and Experience:
Demonstrated experience as a Strategic marketing and communications leader in an organization or association, with specific established expertise in strategic stakeholder communications, B2B marketing and advocacy.
At least 8-10 years in a management role in an association, an aerospace-related corporation, or a media relations entity;
Experience in the primary/senior marketing and communications role.
Early adopter of technology as an enabler tool and understanding media metrics.
Ability to effectively communicate the vision, programs, and value of membership in AIAA to maintain and increase membership
Budgeting and management including oversight of budgets;
Superb interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work collegially with others and with the highest standards of integrity;
Excellent communicator with great presentation skills for all audiences.
Ability to thrive in a matrixed environment and as a team leader, producing high quality work in a timely manner.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in communications or journalism preferred
Ability and motivation to expand into new targeted market adjacencies, their customers, their desired expansion/growth plans, and business needs
Aerospace/Aviation industry experience preferred
Association experience preferred
Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to question the Status Quo
