The Office of the Vice President for International Affairs provides leadership and advocacy for global engagement and international activities on all campuses. The office oversees IU’s international student and scholar services, overseas study, international development, international partnerships, and network of global gateway offices.
This is a newly revised position, reporting to the Vice President and serving on OVPIA's senior leadership team. The Director of Marketing and Communications (Director) serves as chief marketing and communications strategist regarding the image of IU's global engagement across all campuses, for both internal and external audiences. The incumbent will create a broad communications strategy for the Office of the Vice President for International Affairs (OVPIA) to increase the visibility of IU's global engagement and will implement and lead that strategy through timely and effective communications using all forms of media.
The Director has operational and budgetary oversight of OVPIA and Global Gateway Network marketing and communications efforts and is responsible for developing the OVPIA brand and ensuring it works in concert with the overall branding strategy of the university, is in alignment with other key departmental partners, and follows branding guidelines and best practices. The Director also provides business/systems analysis and technical assistance for OVPIA marketing and communications activities, especially in the area of Client Relations Management (CRM) and other marketing systems. The Director will exercise final review and edit authority for OVPIA marketing and communications listed above and will monitor, measure, and improve effectiveness of communication strategy over time.
The Director will oversee:
the development, writing, preparation, and dissemination of such items as VP-level annual reports, VP annual and biannual memos to faculty, talking points and PowerPoint slide templates/data graphics used by senior leadership, marketing campaigns associated with IU Day or the Bicentennial, print materials, press releases, briefings, and others;
the web presence of OVPIA, including video and photo content, coordinating with affiliated units, and supervising one 3IT Web Systems Developer to implement the strategy, content, and functionality of web pages; and
the social media presence of OVPIA and Global Gateway Network.
REQUIRED: Bachelor’s degree and five years of progressively responsible experience in marketing, advertising, or communications.
Combinations of related education and experience may be considered.
Expert knowledge of marketing concepts, strategies, and techniques. Comfort with learning new technologies and teaching them to various audiences. Exceptional communication skills. Strong technical and analytical skills, with willingness to embrace new technology. Good understanding of design processes and a keen eye for design. Able to work effectively across the university with leadership, faculty, staff, administrators, and external audiences. Able to demonstrate sensitivity, discretion, and maintain confidentiality.
Bachelor’s degree in marketing, public relations, journalism, English, creative writing, graphic arts, communications, or a related field. Master's degree. Experience in an academic setting or in an organization focused on international education or partnership activities.
