Departmental Overview The Lawrence Hall of Science is UC Berkeley's public science center and a leading provider of science and mathematics learning materials, curriculum, educator resources and programs, exhibits, and experiences, for K-12th grade students, educators, the public.
The Marketing and Communications Specialist position writes and develops digital and some print communications, maintain the Hall's social media channels, works with advertisers and sponsors, and provides marketing support to a wide array of Hall programs and products. Serves as part of a team that conducts marketing efforts to increase attendance and participation in Hall programs, and generate revenue from a wide range of sources including educational programs and services, retail merchandise sold in the store and Cafe, and membership, individual and corporate donations and sponsorships. Work includes analysis of constituencies/audiences and the development of materials, services, and outreach activities to meet identified needs and influence public perception of the Hall; position will represent the Hall with the public, the media (press, television, radio) and online as needed. May staff public events on behalf of the Hall. May work occasional weekend days or evenings as needed for marketing purposes.
Under general supervision, plans, develops and implements basic marketing, advertising, and communications plans, strategies and/or events for projects. Works with Hall staff and the marketing team to develop and implement plans to achieve revenue, fundraising and audience goals.
Ensures good customer service through providing appropriate information to answer questions and explain basic products and services.
Ensures all final materials have been proofed and reviewed by necessary stakeholders and appropriate sponsorship credit lines are included in all promotional materials as contractually obligated, and details such as contact information, and event times and dates are accurate and consistent.
Drafts and/or edits copy for marketing projects or programs featured on Hall website, in advertisements, on media announcements, et cetera. Creates publication-ready content for campaigns across print and digital media, including concept development with designers and program staff. Maintains Hall's email marketing programs, social media channels, and event calendars to ensure current information is being effectively disseminated.
Coordinates design, production and distribution of promotional materials, including web materials, advertisements, flyers, signage, A/V presentations, banners, community event displays, etc. Conducts organic (non paid) and paid advertising placements and schedules. Oversees Google Adwords. Works with vendors and partners to effectively market Hall programs.
Conducts basic market research and/or sales and generates and uses marketing and/or sales reports. Researches methods for generating awareness and building an audience of visitors and educators, presenting findings and recommending plans as appropriate
Creates/maintains marketing files, records, calendars, logs and other related documents.
Two years marketing experience including digital marketing experience using Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Yelp and YouTube.
Solid knowledge of marketing principles, concepts, strategies and best practices.
Knowledge of customer service standards/procedures.
Organizational skills and skills in file creation, maintenance and management.
Written and interpersonal communication skills.
Written and verbal English language skills.
Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
Microsoft Office & Adobe Creative Suite proficiency required
