We are seeking a skilled, creative and hard-working Senior Photographer in the Web & Creative (W&C) department within the Marketing and Communications division. In this role you will be responsible for visually telling the unique story of the university. You will report to the Senior Associate Director, Photo & Video, and also work closely with the Creative Director who oversees the strategic creative vision for the division.
The primary role of the Senior Photographer is visually documenting our groundbreaking research, world changing students and faculty, and high-profile events and initiatives. You will create and produce photography for far-reaching online communications, including the cmu.edu homepage, and provide artistic and technical photographic consultation to members of the division, executive leadership and other campus constituents. You will direct the daily photography operations, including client communications, assignment scheduling and resource allocation. You will also provide input on the strategic direction of the photo team and contribute to future efforts to manage and maximize the value of university photographic archives and assets.
Your core responsibilities will include:
Provide complete photographic services to all university departments and schools, both in studio and on location, from initial request to delivery of final product.
Maintain day to day operations of photo team, resolving the best allocation of time and resources to cover project workload, employing and managing a pool of freelancers and bringing on student workers and interns as needed.
Work closely with the Senior Associate Director, with input from the Creative Director, on many aspects of project planning, creative vision and implementation.
Collaborate with the other members of the Photo & Video team, as well as the entire Web & Creative department, including graphic designers, project managers, web developers and digital content managers.
Collaborate with the Content & Communications team to enhance visual storytelling efforts for communication vehicles such the cmu.edu homepage
Make estimates and bids on photographic requests and work with clients to offer creative solutions to satisfy their photographic needs within budget
Operate and maintain professional camera and lighting equipment, maintain a digital photography archive and search for and provide photographs upon request.
Stay abreast of new technology and current trends, and be aware of appropriate photo formats for emerging communications channels and platforms.
Maintain quality control of photography, editing, post processing and archiving procedures, reviewing and updating as necessary.
You will demonstrate technical and aesthetic skills with a sophisticated eye for lighting, composition and moment. You have the ability to take art direction as well as the ability to make creative suggestions, and the ability to work cooperatively and professionally with faculty and staff from all levels of the university.

Due to the nature of this role, travel to on- and off-campus, and other locations will be required as needed; evening and weekend hours.
Bachelor's Degree in art/design or a technical field, or equivalent combination of training and experience highly desired
Minimum 5 years of professional experience in commercial, technical and/or public relations photography, with demonstrated skill in event, promotional, illustrative, social media, sports, tabletop and portraiture photography, in studio and on location; higher education experience is desirable
High level of proficiency with industry standard software (Adobe Photoshop and Raw, Lightroom, Bridge, Premiere, Portfolio Web) in a Mac environment
Thorough knowledge of and experience with photography processes and equipment, including professional SLR digital cameras
