Located in the growing and vibrant city of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Augustana University has, for more than 150 years, provided a strong student-centric education based on its five core values: Christian faith, liberal arts, excellence, community and service. In recent years, the institution has expanded its pre-professional and graduate offerings, becoming a comprehensive university in the liberal arts tradition. Guided by its ambitious strategic plan, “Horizons 2019,” Augustana seeks to grow its student body from its current approximate 2,100 members to 2,500 by 2019. In pursuit of that plan, the University saw its largest incoming class since 1978 in fall 2017.
The Vice President for Strategic Communications & Marketing reports directly to the President. As a member of the President’s cabinet, the Vice President collaborates with other members of the senior leadership team and campus community to carry out the mission and values of the University. Under the dynamic and visionary leadership of President Stephanie Herseth Sandlin, who was inaugurated just last year, there is much excitement and momentum on which to build making it an ideal time to join an incredibly talented team. With particular focus on positioning the University for growth and increased visibility in the region and nationally, the new Vice President will join an institution that is evaluating long-term goals and laying the groundwork for the next strategic plan.
The Vice President will advise and partner with members of the senior leadership team, faculty and staff to achieve institutional goals through effective communication and marketing strategies. The successful candidate is responsible for developing and implementing a communication and marketing strategy that aligns with the University’s strategic plan, develops and empowers personnel, and adheres to budget. The candidate must be a strategic and creative thinker who has with a collaborative, pro-active style and the ability to provide transformational leadership. The successful candidate will also present a background of progressively increased responsibility in a comprehensive and sophisticated communications program, including supervision of experienced staff and a thorough working knowledge of communications planning and metrics-driven outcomes.
The candidate must have a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree preferred, with 10 or more years of progressively responsible experience in marketing or communications. The candidate will have five to ten years of senior-level leadership and management experience, preferably in higher education or a related area. The candidate must have demonstrated success and analytical aptitude in the development and implementation of a wide range of communications and branding strategies and tactics for diverse campus constituencies. The candidate must have the ability to effectively work in an integrated marketing and communications setting that includes technology, public and media relations, branding, design, promotion and advertising, and has proven success in interactions with local and national media. The candidate must have a high degree of personal initiative and proven interpersonal and team skills.
