University Housing, a unit within the Division of Student Affairs, consists of Housing Administration, Facilities Operations, University Housing Depot, Housing Technology, and Residential Life and Education, sharing the overall responsibility for serving the on-campus housing program for over 7,000 residents, which includes 3,300 students living in residence halls, 3,700 students in the Cerro Vista and Poly Canyon Village apartments; 45 students in Agriculture Housing units; 36 students in Cal Poly Lofts downtown; and housing approximately 16,000 guests annually. The University Housing Department consists of approximately 137 full-time staff, up to 50 part-time staff and 150+ student assistants with an overall annual Departmental operating budget of over $50 million.

The incumbent in this position is a member of the University Housing team. In conjunction with the Executive Director, Associate Directors and other managers, staff, and students, this position assists in carrying out the mission and philosophy of University Housing and is responsible for supporting and contributing to a positive atmosphere that facilitates respect, inclusivity and collaboration.
Under the direction of the Assistant Director, Outreach & Communications, the Marketing Coordinator provides a broad range of marketing and communications expertise to support and engage students, parents/supporters and faculty/staff in the University Housing experience. The position produces and promotes creative marketing, branding and communications campaigns in accordance with the department's strategic communications objectives and University brand standards. It is responsible for independently developing written communications and collaborating with the Graphic Designer on visual execution across multiple communications platforms. The Marketing Coordinator is also responsible for innovating, coordinating and executing outreach programs and events to maximize student engagement, including the University Housing Ambassador tour program. The position is also responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Housing Administration front office ensuring students, staff, visitors and guests receive exemplary customer service.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
Bachelor's degree and three years of progressively responsible experience in marketing and public relations, or a related field.
Exceptional communication skills including strong public speaking; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear manner, both verbally and in writing.
Strong storytelling and journalistic writing skills, as well as advanced editorial skills.
Demonstrated ability to keep abreast of campus events and subject matter expertise in relation to current events.
Knowledge of interview techniques and the ability to define and deliver messages; ability to interview, research and write compelling stories for web and print publication.
Working knowledge of marketing and public relations practices and principles. Thorough knowledge of web communication techniques, vehicles and formats and the ability to effectively use web technology to achieve communication goals.
Excellent computer skills including working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn a new program, use a variety of software programs including word processing, desktop publishing, photo editing, creative design, web page development and web browsers. Strong aptitude for communications technology, with demonstrable skills.
Demonstrated ability to stage and coordinate video and photography shoots.
Working knowledge of and ability to apply standard theories, practices, principles and techniques related to planning, designing and completing electronic and print media, including publications and other marketing and communications materials.
Thorough knowledge of and ability to effectively use new media and social networking sites including planning campaigns for University Housing and events.
Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling, punctuation and modern English usage.
Demonstrated experience organizing and coordinating special events.
Knowledge of, or ability to quickly learn, departmental, division and university objectives and priorities and to interpret and convey objectives to key constituent groups.
Working knowledge of applicable laws pertaining to written and electronic materials, confidentiality and news media, including libel/slander, copyright, and privacy laws.

Experience with video coordination and production processes (hiring, scripting, and editing).
Experience in media coordination and maintaining extensive media contact lists.
Knowledge of designing material destined for commercial printing.
Knowledge of branding theories and concepts in order to develop and execute communication strategies.
Experience supervising staff and student employees.

Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
